12.10
This is date number four of the 12 Dates of Christmas. Watching Christmas movies is one of our favorite holiday traditions. There’s nothing better than settling in on a cold winter night and watching a movie that reminds you of all the good times that come with Christmas. This year we decided to watch Elf. Though it wasn’t an easy decision to make, the night turned out just fine in the end.

SHE SAID:
Every year since we’ve been married we’ve had the tradition of adding a new Christmas movie (or two) to our collection. I’m sure we’ll eventually run out of good ones, but so far in our collection we have Home Alone, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, The Holiday and the original How the Grinch Stole Christmas movie.
This year was a bit of a battle of the sexes as I wanted to buy The Santa Clause and Brad wanted to purchase Elf. Since I weaseled my way into getting The Holiday last year, I graciously agreed to his choice.
Elf is one of those movies that I originally hated and now like more and more every time I watch it. I’m not sure where my initial hatred stemmed from, but I think it had something to do with having no prior Will Ferrell appreciation. Brad, on the other hand, has loved Elf since day one, when Zooey Deschanel first appeared to him on screen and changed his life forever.
Elf is actually a pretty funny movie and I’ll watch it any day over A Christmas Carol. That movie is a glorified Christmas horror film that will NEVER make it’s way into my collection…unless maybe if it’s the Muppet’s version.
One movie that I have been trying to get my hands on is a cartoon that aired on CBC back in the 80’s called Bluetoes: The Christmas Elf. I know you can get it on YouTube, but if anyone out there knows of where you can buy it on DVD please let me know!
Our movie date started out pretty well, but ended as many of our mid-week movie dates do – me asleep within the first half hour. I made the mistake of lying down and not eating to keep my brain awake and turned into a limp, unconscious figure. Clearly, I was not a very good date. Learn from my mistakes.
HE SAID:
One of the traditions that my family started during the last few years I lived at home was to watch a Christmas movie on Christmas Eve just before we went to bed. We didn’t just watch any Christmas movie, no no. We watched National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. I love that movie. Sure, I don’t laugh as hard as the first time I saw it, but it still gets me every time.
Susan and I don’t have a specific day that we like to watch Christmas movies on, but instead our tradition is just to buy and watch a new Christmas movie until we run out of ones we’re interested in. I won the battle this year and got Elf. I would imagine this is a love it or hate it kind of movie. I think Will Ferrell’s silliness is perfect in this movie as he plays a human who was raised as an elf. Of course the best part of the movie is Zooey Deschanel, who lights up the screen (and my heart) with every scene she is in.
Anyway, I love watching Christmas movies. For me it’s one of the best ways to get into the Christmas spirit. I remember as a kid being incredibly excited when we would catch a Christmas special on TV.
I think some of my favorite Christmas specials are ones that I can’t find anymore, except on YouTube. Last night I came across the Sesame Street Christmas Eve special. I used to have the audio of it on cassette when I was a kid and I remember listening to it when I went to bed. I also remember enjoying Raggedy Ann & Andy Great Santa Caper, A Muppet Family Christmas, and Babar and Father Christmas.
Watching a Christmas movie is a great date idea. There’s no better way to bring two people together than through a classic movie you both enjoy. It might be a good idea to have a festive treat to eat and to make sure it’s not too late at night if you’re like us and tend to fall asleep easily.

I love many Christmas movies and specials and would be hard-pressed to pick just one favourite. So, here’s a list of some of them:
-Rudolph the Red–Nosed Reindeer (Rankin/Bass)
-Frosty the Snowman (Rankin/Bass)
-Muppets Family Christmas
-National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
-Home Alone
-How the Grinch Stole Christmas
-Jingle all the Way
-Charlie Brown Christmas
For me, it is not Christmas until I watch A Muppet Family Christmas. I’ve been watching that since I was a little girl, with my mom and sister. We would decorate the tree to loud Christmas music, make a platter of snacks, then hunker down in front of the TV to watch that special.
Last year was our first Christmas together with my boyfriend, and even though there was so much change going on in my life,I wanted to keep that tradition going. We tried looking for it on DVD, but when that failed, we snuggled up in bed with the laptop between us and watched it on Youtube. We still can’t find it on DVD so it’ll be another Youtube viewing this year, but as long as it makes us feel like Christmas, it doesn’t matter much!
Theres a few Christmas Movies on my list I love. Now, since it did happen at Christmas time I still put Die Hard on the list at the top. Also for Adult comedy got to love The Ref. For Family Comedy National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. For Children’s Cartoon Chistmas movies would have to be Charlie Brown Christmas
Love Actually
and
Black Christmas (although it’s technically a horror movie) (and I’m talking about the one from the 70s, not the recent remake)
We’ve been dying for a DVD copy of Home Alone, since we only have it on tape, and oddly enough, don’t have a VCR hooked up to our TV. I’d have to go with Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, Elf, and It’s a Wonderful Life, in some order of those 4.
I’ve started a similar collection, but I’ve made mine the Dark Christmas movies. Edgy, strange, but yet somehow related to Christmas. Too many years as a single guy? Maybe.
My favorite is Stanley Kubrick’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut. Not at all a family movie, but it is set during the days leading up to Christmas. Redemptive? Maybe not so much.
The original Die Hard (and to a lesser extent, Die Hard 2) also makes for a heart-warming Christmas film. It has all the classic elements: carols, holiday travel, a family reunion, and a creepy elf-like guy with an accent.
Oh my goodness, so many to choose from but the ones that came to mind first is The Grinch (cartoon) and The Muppet Family Christmas.
Its clearly Dennis Leary and Kevin Spacey in The Ref
Wow, so many to choose from.
* Elf
* Love Actually
* Children’s Classics – Rudolph, Frosty, Christmas Eve on Sesame Street
* Home Alone
* The Santa Clause
* National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
I love WHITE CHRISTMAS!!! All time favorite Christmas movie! I love it so much! I could probably quote the entire thing. I love music, dancing and of course, Bing Crosby.
I love all of the old claymations also and most of the Hallmark movies are good. I really liked their movie The Christmas Card.
One movie I try to avoid like the plague is A Christmas Story. Can’t take it!
My favorite christmas movie was a called “Scamper” it was a cartoon about a penguin and was very cute, also with a huge moral as most cartoons have.
I’m really impressed by all these suggestions. Some I had forgotten about, some I had overlooked as Christmas movies, and some I have never even heard of. Good work!
Elf for sure!
Fun! I love Elf and The Holiday, as well. Love Actually always puts me in a warm and fuzzy Christmas mood. And I can miss the classics when they’re on TV — Rudolph, Frosty & the Grinch!
I definitely don’t like Elf! Probably because I can’t stand Will Ferrell. My boyfriend, on the other hand, LOVES this movie! Maybe I’ll give it another chance this year..
My FAVORITE Christmas movies are The Grinch (original!), Prancer, and the Frosty movie with Tim Allen! Nobody has probably ever heard of Prancer it, but it’s the sweetest story! Actually, I think I’ll watch that tonight :)
one most often forgotten is Batman Returns. I was only reminded of it at work the other day during a battle to name the most obscure christmas movie titles.
While it doesn’t have many of the staple themes that usually make a holiday movie, it packs a decent enough punch.

Emmett Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas
It’s my all-time favourite Christmas special. Though, I don’t think that it gets aired on television anymore. Such a shame really. Here’s the Muppet Wiki:

“When the River Meets the Sea” is such a great song. Adorable.
Of course, I can’t go without saying that catching pretty much any Christmas special from my childhood is amazing. Home Alone tops the list.. I just love it when Kevin hits the bad guys in the faces with the paint cans! And of course How The Grinch Stole Christmas, though I love the original AND the Jim Carrey version. And I also love the original Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer with Burl Ives. You can’t beat Burl Ives. :)
Wow, surprised only one mention of the Christmas Story, and negative too. These suggestions are late but here is to Christmas 2010.
1. Last of the Summer Wine Christmas Episodes, BBC, Quite fun if you like Brit humour.
2. The Dead, 1987, Lionsgate, John Hustons adaption of James Joyce’s short story has finally been released on DVD. Make sure you get the full 83 minute version there was a debacle before the holiday when the initial release was 73 minutes. It takes place on the evening of Old Christmas in Dublin 1904 at a holiday party.
3. The House Without a Christmas Tree, 1972 made for TV film starring Jason Robards.
4. A Christmas Memory, Emmy Award Winning 1966 made for TV movie starring Geraldine Page. Truman Capote narrates this story of a young boy and his disabled Aunt in the Depression era south. Criminally hard to find only available on VHS.
Not exactly Frosty, Rudolph, and Charlie Brown, but worth considering.
Thanks, those are some very unique suggestions, we’ll have to check them out for next year.
