One year my roommates and I even did this during college! It was great! My grandpa always decorated outside with lights for us! That was always so special to me. I tried doing it one year for my mom when I was in high school. I had everything all up, took about 3 hours and then dad wouldnt plug them in for me. I couldn't figure out where the nearest outlet was. I was frustrated and saddened. BUT I can't wait to have my own house to decorate! I will be thrilled! I used to love doing this too. My husband on the other hand loves them because they are so bright. However, there is now an LED alternative for those of us that love the warm, yellow glow - I have seen them, I think they're called warm white. Brad, I was also mislead by the assumption that rich people would have very nice outdoor decorations & was sadly disappointed by the lack of anything festive in those upscale neighborhoods. I think it must be because they're working so much to pay for their expensive houses, they don't have time to decorate. I'm sure they could pay someone though! On your next outing you should come down my street, it's very colorful! As my neighbor said "it feels like I'm in wonderland!" I'm pretty sure you can get ones that are the same colour as incandescent bulbs, but it seems that everyone has the blue ones... maybe some people like them better. Then there are people that take it way too far... Christmas trees with glowing blue LED lights, that's even worse than decorating your yard with them.
